Sunday, August 20, 2017 New Plan for Visit
Today we got up and around a little earlier. After getting dressed, we walked the dogs. I doubt anyone in the RV park would like us to walk our dogs naked! LOL!
Then we left them so we could tour the Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center - one of the major sights I've been waiting to visit. It opens at 10:00 and there was plenty of room to park today! We walked uphill and took a few pictures then started our tour. The tour is $5.00 per person (adults). It is set up like a timeline with miles at the start and listed at certain points of the picture timeline. It has interactive displays which are great. We even watched the movie. I have read a long book on the expedition. It is fascinating how these brave people made this epic journey and the records they kept along with their scientific recordings. History and science combined, I love that!
The US Army constructed 3 forts to defend the entrance to the Columbia River from enemy warships - Fort Canby, Fort Columbia and Fort Stevens. Fort Stevens is on my agenda for our visit to Oregon in a week or so. These forts were manned until the end of WW II.
A small boat and the Cape Disappointment Lighthouse - a little closer view than my previous picture.
Captains Lewis & Clark used a Sextant and octant to enable them to determine the longitude and latitude. We have it easy today with our GPS and smart phones!
We stopped by the grocery store then went back to the RV. We had our lunch then a nap.
This evening we just walked the dogs and hung out at the RV. I think tomorrow we will watch the eclipse and walk to the Beach.
The Kite Festival start tomorrow and goes on all week - but I am not sure we will get to see much of it as we are leaving Tuesday. If you want to read and see some awesome pictures of the Kite Festival go to the blog Kissackadventures.blogspot.com.
