After lunch, we explored old Fort El Reno. This was a nice way to spend a windy afternoon. The Fort was established in 1874 as a military camp, and later as a military post in 1876. We toured the museum and the chapel. It was established to keep peace in the transition of this part of the Indian Territory from reservations to individual farms and ranches. The fort served as one of three remount depots and had lots of specialized horse breeding and training programs. it was also a German POW camp and the German POW's were so well treated here, they wanted to build a chapel to show their appreciation.
Additionally, this place has "Ghosts of Fort Reno" Tours on the third Saturday of every month. The group was there getting ready for the upcoming tour on April 18, 2015. We also looked over the graveyard, it had a separate area for German & Italian POW's. If you are in the area, it is worth the time to visit. It cost $5.00 to see the site (3 adults, 1 child).
