We stopped at the first Kansas rest stop and checked the brakes, walked the dogs and did a walk around to see if everything seemed OK. So far, so good.
Onward we went right on up I-35 to I-70. When we stopped again at a rest stop (after Salina, of course) Steve noticed that gear oil from the front wheel bearings seemed to be leaking and we needed to get some gear oil to fill them.
Of course, we had just left the bigger town behind and it was just as far to the next stop as it would have been to go on. So, we kept going until we got to the next exit. Well we stopped at the gas station there and they were none too friendly - it was 8 miles south to Ellsworth, KS -where we could probably find the gear oil at Orschlein's. Can we leave our RV here and just drive our pickup there? OH NO - you can' to park it here - not enough room -everything else around the station is private property...Forget that. So we drove the RV towing the pickup south to Ellsworth for gear oil. We stopped in the parking lot across the street and some nice guy pulling a huge boat checked to see if we needed help. He was nice and even told us we could park our RV at his property in Raine (??). He said it would probably be better to go on towards Hays, KS not Great Bend to get the wheel bearings looked at. So Steve filled them up and we returned to I-70 and headed west to Hays, KS.
We got to Hays and had the darnedest time finding a big enough to place to pull in to get gas. So we nixed the idea of trying to find a place there to work on the wheel bearings. Steve's next idea is to get as close to Denver as possible -because he thinks that will be the best bet to have someone look at our problem and fix it. So he keeps driving west. We stopped at another rest stop and he checked the gear oil - it was ok- so we walked the dogs and ourselves and then drove West some more.
About the time we got to Oakley Kansas (where we have stayed before at the High Plains CG) it started getting cloudy - didn't think much about it. Steve kept driving. Then it started raining! Then it started pouring rain - what I call a gully washer! I got him to pull over at the Colby, KS Pilot and we ate a Subway Sandwich and waited for the rain to slow down. We saw a beautiful full rainbow - couldn't get the whole thing in the picture!
I called an RV Park (Whistle Stop RV CG) in Colby and we stayed there. When we got out to hook up the water and electric - we did put on our Ponchos - luckily, but the rain and wind was terrible. We could barely get things done. Then we went to their office and filled out an envelope (in the pouring rain) and put our money in it and put it in the slot. It cost $35.00. It also had cable TV - but that was snowy. Anyway - we were glad to be down for the night about 9:00 or 9:30 PM! RVing can be a little rough sometimes!
